Gerunds
A. Definition

A gerund is a noun made from a verb by adding -ing to the base form of a verb and making any necessary changes. A gerund has the same form as present participle, but they have different functions.

e.g.:

B. Functions

Gerunds can act as subjects, direct objects, object of prepositions, subject of complements, and appositves.

e.g.:

1. Singing is Joe's vocation. (subject)

2. Joe likes singing. (direct object)

3. Joe earns his living by singing. (object of preposition)

4. Joe's vocation is singing. (subject complement)
